About the Program

A signature annual recognition.

The Vanguard Awards will be the region's definitive recognition of technology leadership — celebrating the people who transform businesses, build exceptional teams, drive innovation, and give back to the community.

Presented by SIM Detroit, the inaugural Vanguard Awards will recognize the CIOs and senior technology leaders across Southeast Michigan whose work defines what modern technology leadership looks like. Nominations are open to any qualified leader — regardless of SIM Detroit membership — and self-nominations are encouraged.

Finalists are evaluated by an independent panel of peer judges across five equally-weighted dimensions of leadership.

Judging Criteria

Five dimensions of leadership.

Every finalist is evaluated by an independent panel of peer judges across five equally-weighted criteria. No single area outweighs another — a winning leader shows excellence across the whole.

Each criterion weighted at 20%
01

Business Value & Impact

Measurable business outcomes — ROI, revenue growth, cost savings, efficiency gains, customer satisfaction, and other quantifiable results.

Award Categories

Three categories. One standard of excellence.

Tech Leader of the Year awards are grouped by organization size to level the playing field — so the small-company CIO wearing six hats is judged beside her peers, not against the Fortune 500. Three finalists are selected per category; one winner is named at the Fall Summit.

01
Tech Leader of the Year

Small Company

Org Size · Fewer than 500 employees

Recognizes the CIO at a small organization delivering outsized impact relative to resources — often wearing multiple hats and leading with exceptional creativity and resourcefulness.

02
Tech Leader of the Year

Mid-Size Company

Org Size · 500 to 4,999 employees

Recognizes the CIO scaling technology capabilities, building strong teams, and partnering effectively with executive leadership during growth or transformation.

03
Tech Leader of the Year

Large Company

Org Size · 5,000+ employees

Recognizes the CIO driving significant transformation, managing complexity at scale, and demonstrating executive leadership that extends well beyond the technology organization.

Eligibility

Open to every qualified leader in Southeast Michigan.

  • 01 Hold the title of CIO, CTO, VP of IT, or serve as the most senior technology leader in your organization.
  • 02 Be a practitioner or executive — vendors, consultants, and service providers are not eligible.
  • 03 Operate in or maintain a significant professional presence in Southeast Michigan.
  • 04 Organizations may be public, private, nonprofit, government, or academic.
  • 05 SIM Detroit membership is not required — for the nominee or the nominator. Self-nominations are encouraged.
A note on self-nomination. Some of the most impactful technology leaders in our region are quietly doing extraordinary work without external visibility. If that sounds like you, nominate yourself. The process is brief, and the recognition is earned.
